How the NFL Schedule is Built

The NFL schedule is not randomly built, but with just three divisional opponents for each team to play, and 17 matchups to fill, there’s quite a bit that goes into it.

Here’s how NFL scheduling works:

  • Home and away games against three divisional opponents (six games).
  • Four games against the teams in another division within the conference on a rotating, three-year cycle.
  • Four games against the teams in another division from the other conference on a rotating, four-year cycle.
  • Two games against teams from the same conference, but different divisions, and one from the other conference, who placed in the same spot. For example, the Detroit Lions were NFC North champions, so they would play teams that placed first in their respective divisions (three games).
